Our New Friend

A while back I went for a walk around our neighborhood. As I was walking on the sidewalk I nearly stepped on this little bird. And she was MAD! She yelled at me and then started flapping her wings and running away. After I got home, I told Cody that I thought that this little bird was a baby and couldn't fly yet or it was hurt. A few days later the whole fam went for a walk and saw the same bird in the exact same place-so I pointed her out to Cody. He informed me that it was an adult and wasn't injured...it is a Killdeer. Right then a little neighbor boy pointed out a little inconspicuous nest full of 4 eggs- right there on the ground! After talking to Andy and looking it up on the internet we learned about our little friend. Killdeer lay their eggs on the ground usually in the lawn or gravel. The eggs are cream and black speckled and blend in perfectly...which is why I never saw it the first time. They are named after the sound they emit and they often act injured by flapping a wing and then run off to try to draw the predator away from the nest- arent they smart!? Our little gal has a partner who ALSO comes over and acts injured to try and draw us away. We have followed their progress closely and check on them quite regularly. Some times several times a day. In fact, I think all the neighbors wonder who the crazy lady is driving by very slowly 4 times a day in front of their house with her children not buckled in and hanging out the window to see the "Killbird"! Anywhoo...today a friend called to inform me that 2 of the eggs had hatched! I feel like a proud new mama even though I had NOTHING to do with their coming about. Didn't God create some amazing things?
